During the period of January 1st to June 30th, 2019, Romania held its first mandate in the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The working agenda of Romania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union focused on four main pillars:

  • Europe of Convergence: ensuring convergence and cohesion for sustainable and equitable development for all citizens and member states by enhancing competitiveness and reducing development disparities, promoting social progress, fostering connectivity and digitalization, stimulating entrepreneurship, and strengthening industrial policy.
  • Europe of Security: consolidating a secure Europe through increased cohesion among member states in the face of new security challenges threatening the safety of citizens and supporting initiatives for cooperation in this field.
  • Europe as a Global Actor: strengthening Europe's global role through continued implementation of the Global Strategy, ensuring the necessary resources at the Union level, promoting enlargement policy, Union action in the neighborhood, and implementing EU's global commitments.
  • Europe of Common Values: promoting solidarity and cohesion within the Union by advancing policies to combat discrimination, promote equal opportunities and equal treatment for women and men, as well as increasing citizen involvement in European debates.
